GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Adult Counselor is a professional human service position that provides client-centered individual, group and or family therapy and counseling services to victims and survivors of sexual and domestic violence. Provides clinical assessments, safety plans, advocacy, support and therapeutic interventions.
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum requirements for this position include a master’s degree in social work, counseling or related field. Prior clinical experience and familiarity with trauma informed practice is preferred. Knowledge of and experience with domestic violence is also preferred. Must have valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and time management skills.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides psychosocial assessments and individual counseling for survivors of domestic violence.
- Provides medical advocacy to survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
- Provides group social work for survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
- Provides crisis counseling, intervention and referrals through crisis phone counseling.
- Provides transportation and accompaniment to court or other community meetings for survivors as needed.
- Maintains case records on survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
- Provides individual and/or social work group counseling for families and significant others of survivors.
- Plans and implements interventions for individuals and families.
- Makes appropriate referrals and advocates for individuals and families to other agencies when appropriate.
- Works collaboratively with counselors, volunteers and interns working as domestic violence and sexual violence counselors and/or advocates.
- Records and reports direct client activity as required.
- Attends and participates in all meetings as required.
- Works collaboratively with children’s and sexual violence counselors regarding client activities and relationships.
- Adheres to confidentiality policy as it relates to shelter residents, clients and all aspects of agency operations; records, reports, and discussions.
- Behaves in a manner consistent with LACASA Philosophies, Standards of Conduct and LACASA Staff Handbook.
- Attends and participates in all meetings as required.
- Completes all other duties as assigned.
