GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Legal Advocate is a professional human service position that provides support and advocacy for survivors of sexual violence, domestic violence and child sexual abuse during the criminal justice process. This position requires strong skills in crisis intervention, advocacy, organization and knowledge of sexual assault and the criminal justice process.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required. Two years of experience providing support to individuals in crisis; two years of experience in a related field such as criminal justice advocacy preferred. Knowledge of facts and dynamics of sexual assault, domestic/interpersonal violence and child sexual abuse preferred.  Knowledge of community resources. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to communicate with individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Must have valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides advocacy and support for survivors during the investigative and criminal justice process.
  • Provides follow up services with survivors.
  • Assists survivors in completing Personal Protection Orders (PPOs) and safety plans.
  • Networks with the community around client-identified needs and issues for survivors.
  • Provides personal advocacy, case management, and referrals for survivors as needed.
  • Provides crisis counseling intervention and referrals through agency helpline for clients as needed.
  • Provides crisis intervention through the on-call program to survivors as needed.
  • Processes Child Abuse Response Effort (CARE) referrals and provides support, advocacy and referrals to the family during the CARE process.
  • Records and maintains documentation in keeping with the standards established by agency and related funders.
  • Provides respite for parents, as needed.
  • Assists in the development of client services.
  • Assists with transportation as needed.
  • Attends and participates in all meetings as required.
  • Adheres to ethical standards of one’s individual profession.
  • Protects client’s confidentiality
  • Adheres to guidelines and expectations as outlined in the staff orientation, Employee Handbook, LACASA Policies and Procedures
  • Maintains a safe environment for staff, clients and the community.
  • Completes all other duties as assigned.

Schedule: Regular Full-time/Non-exempt; Predominately in-person/on-site position
